Procedure Project
Welcome to Grade 1
Dear Families,
Welcome to Grade 1! This will be a very exciting year filled with hard work and lots of social and academic growth for your child! Our classroom is a wonderful space where your child can take risks in their learning, and support others as they reach for their goals. Be sure to read and sign your child's agenda each evening. It will contain important information about homework and upcoming events. Your child's agenda is a very important communication tool that will allow your child to develop their organizational skills.
Things to know:
Library is every Day 5. Check your child's agenda to see which 'Day" it is. We will also usually have an agenda message as a reminder.
Gym is every Day 2 & Day 4 with Mr. Hill. In addition to Gym, we will also have DPA (Daily Physical Activity). We will often go to GoNoodle.com for these 15 minute energizers.
Reading is homework EVERYDAY. It is so important to develop your child's literacy skills. By the end of the year, each child is expected to be reading at a PM level 16. Often, our students are reading much higher than this! Please return your child's Take Home Books every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Below, I have listed some websites that we will be using throughout the school year. You might wish to check out these sites at home to further support your child's learning.

Kids A-Z!
During our Reading Workshop, students will have a chance to read a range of leveled books using the app 'Kids a-z". This is a terrific resource that allows your child the opportunity to hear stories, read them, and then take a comprehension test on those books. As your child is successful, they can move up reading levels. This great resource can be accessed at home and I strongly encourage you to check this out with your child! You can download the app on any device, or visit the website. The teacher name is msgreatrex and your child is a pro with their password. Click here to access Kids a-z online.
Tumblebooks and Book Flix

Karate Math!
Karate Math is a fun way for students to get motivated to learn their math facts. Students will all begin as white belts, and as they learn their addition and subtraction facts, they will move up belts. For example, knowing numbers plus zero facts is white belt. Knowing numbers plus one facts is yellow belt for grade 1‘s. Students will take regular timed tests, and will need to get a certain number correct within a couple minutes to move up belts. This program will allow students to move at their pace and motivate them to get practicing at home. Practice can be done using links to websites that can be found on our class website under 'Number Sense Practice", playing math games, asking the facts etc. There are even some great apps to practice math facts that kids can download onto ipods. We will start our Karate Math in the new year!!
